What Is the NFL Preseason?

The NFL Preseason is a four-game exhibition period held in August, before the regular season begins. Every team plays 4 preseason games — no wins or losses count toward playoff standings, but the games serve a crucial purpose: coaches evaluate roster talent, depth charts take shape, and rookies and free agent signings compete for their spot on the 53-man active roster.

Despite not counting in the standings, preseason games are watched closely by fans, analysts, and fantasy football players looking for early indicators of form, health, and breakout candidates. NFLBite streams every preseason game free — same multiple-link format as the regular season.

Why Preseason Games Matter
Roster Cuts
Teams must trim from 90 to 53 players by roster deadline. Every preseason snap is an audition — especially for undrafted free agents and practice squad candidates.
Depth Chart Clarity
Backup roles, starting position battles, and role assignments are settled during preseason. Coaches rotate starters to evaluate the full depth of the squad.
Injury Risk Management
Starters typically play limited snaps in preseason — often just the first quarter or first half of Week 1 and 2. By Week 3 (the dress rehearsal game), starters may play into the second half.
Fantasy Football Preview
Preseason is the first live look at new acquisitions, rookie talent, and role changes. Target share, snap counts, and red zone usage in preseason are closely tracked.
